Behaviour

At Hovingham Primary, behaviour is not merely a set of rules; it's a culture we cultivate. We believe in relationships being strong enough to foster a community where being ready, respectful and safe are the cornerstones of our ethos.

Our approach to behaviour is grounded in clear expectations, consistent boundaries, and unwavering support for our children.

The Hovingham Way

We prioritise the teaching of self-regulation, social skills, and personal accountability, this is The Hovingham Way which is a structured and coherent behaviour curriculum which empowers our children to make positive choices, encourages personal growth and learning. We firmly believe that every action has consequences and that learning from mistakes is an integral part of personal development.

Restorative Practice and Catching the Good

At Hovingham, we use fair and restorative practices, championing positive behaviour through always catching the good and providing clear feedback.

Restorative practices involve a proactive approach to behaviour management, teaching children to work through conflict resolution, building a sense of belonging and community and fostering healthy relationships. A restorative approach helps address behavioural issues, understanding what happened, how it happened and by focusing on repairing harm and restoring relationships rather than just punishing or penalising children for their actions.

Staff at Hovingham, use restorative questions which encourage dialogue, empathy, and understanding. The structure allows all children to have a voice and share their perspective, take responsibility, and work together towards finding solutions.

Restorative questions about the incident:

What happened?

What were you thinking at the time?

What did you feel?

Who has been affected by what happened?

Restorative questions about taking Responsibility:

What part did you play in this?

What do you think needs to happen to make things right?

How have your actions affected others?

Restorative questions about Repairing Harm:

What can you do to make things better?

What needs to be done to fix the situation?

How can you make this better for what happened?

Restorative questions about moving Forward:

What needs to change to stop this from happening again?

What support do you need to ensure this doesn't happen again?

The Hovingham Way is Team Work

To build a sense of community and to learn from behaviour, we  know and understand the significance of collaboration between staff, children, and families to create an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, and supported. Our aim is to not just address behaviour but to equip children with the tools necessary to thrive both within our school and in the community our children grow up in.
